Your Why makes you poorer on Tuesday

Contents

Why should anyone — a resident, a partner, an investor — choose you?

You have an answer ready. It’s on slide three. It’s beautifully worded. And it has never once changed a decision you made.

Here’s the test, and it takes ten seconds. Name the last deal your Why lost you. The hire it disqualified. The revenue it refused. If nothing comes to mind, you don’t have a Why.

Simon Sinek was right, and being right ruined it. Start With Why was radical in 2009, but once it became standard boardroom vocabulary, it lost its ability to actually challenge anything. The idea didn’t fail. It got promoted to decoration.

Because a real Why is not inspiration. It’s a constraint. It’s the thing that makes you poorer on Tuesday. It kills the profitable product that doesn’t belong to you. It turns down the client who’d pay in full. It’s expensive, unpopular, and visible in your P&L before it’s visible on your website. A Why that costs nothing isn’t a belief – it’s a preference, and preferences don’t build institutions.

The organisations that lead

This region isn’t short of ambition. It’s short of organisations that can say what they’re for, and mean it when it’s expensive.

The historic national visions being written across the Gulf—including We the UAE 2031, Oman Vision 2040, Saudi Vision 2030, and others—are not simply asking businesses to grow. In this fast-paced environment, growth is already assumed. Instead, they present a much deeper, more challenging question: what will your business have stood for when this chapter of the region’s history is finally written? This is not a superficial marketing or PR question; it is a profound question of stewardship and long-term legacy. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum framed this mindset beautifully with the concept of ‘Dubai-it’.

And if you don't

Here’s what happens to a company that’s only ever answered what.

Your what gets copied. It always does, faster now than at any point in commercial history. Someone matches your product, undercuts your price, hires your people, and does it from a lower cost base. Everything you can describe in a spec sheet is a temporary advantage with an expiry date you don’t control.

Then it gets worse. We’re building an economy where machines summarise, compare, and recommend on your behalf, and machines are exceptionally good at copying whats. A company that is only a list of capabilities is, to an AI, a list of capabilities: interchangeable with every other list, sorted by price. There is no loyalty to a spec. There is no premium for a feature anyone can replicate.

What can’t be copied is the reason you exist and the record of what it cost you. That’s not sentiment, it’s the last durable moat. Companies without one don’t fail dramatically; they commoditise quietly. Same revenue, thinner margins, then someone cheaper, then irrelevance. Nobody notices the moment it happens, including them.

What ours costs us

Fair question to ask us back. Ours costs us revenue, routinely.

We’re Y-FACTOR, a marketing and communications consultancy in Dubai, working with brands and institutions across the GCC. We’re supposed to sell you campaigns. Instead, the work we’re proudest of is often the campaign we talked a client out of, because the diagnosis said the problem was a positioning gap, and a campaign would only have papered over it. That conversation ends with a smaller invoice and a client who actually gets what they came for. We have made that trade more than once. It is the whole business.

That’s what the Y before the What means in practice. We start with the diagnosis, not the deliverable, because a brief that begins with the answer has already skipped the only question that mattered.

That’s why we’re a partner, not an agency. An agency executes your brief. A partner tells you when your brief is the problem, then puts a senior collective of marketing, communications and brand experts alongside your team, with the diagnostic rigour, the regional fluency and the creative firepower to build the right thing once the reason is clear.

So — what has your Why cost you?
